What does it mean to be a Crusader?
At Catholic Community Schools, being a Crusader is about more than wearing blue and gold, cheering from the sidelines, or being part of a school community. It is about who we are and how we choose to live each day.
This year, we are exploring that question together through the Crusader Way and eight characteristics that describe who we are and who we strive to become. We are:
Each of these characteristics tells a part of our story. Together, they create a picture of who we are as Crusaders.
Across our schools, and at every age and level, we will spend the year exploring what these characteristics mean, how we live them, and how we can recognize them in ourselves and in each other. Each month, one characteristic will take the spotlight through activities, conversations, prayer, and reflection. We will look to the lives of saints who exemplify these characteristics and consider how each of us can put them into practice in our own lives.
You may also notice the Crusader Way taking shape around our schools. New posters, banners, and wall decals provide visible reminders of the characteristics we share across CCS. Even more importantly, students and staff are finding ways to recognize one another when they see those characteristics in action—celebrating real examples of what it means to live the Crusader Way.
As we begin the 2026–2027 school year, we are also embracing the words of St. Teresa of Calcutta: “Do small things with great love.” This simple message reminds us that living our faith and the Crusader Way often happens through the small, everyday choices we make—how we treat someone, how we respond to a challenge, how we serve, how we pray, and how we encourage one another.
September began our journey with Courage. Courage means doing what is right, even when it is difficult. Courage helps us stand in truth, lead with faith, and trust in God's guidance.
As the month wraps up, families can continue the conversation at home by asking:
How were you Courageous this month?
Maybe it was trying something new, standing up for a friend, or making a good decision during a difficult time.
In October, our focus turns to Respect, as we explore the ways our faith and our community invite us to be respectful. Then, month by month, we will continue discovering—and celebrating—the many ways our students and staff live the Crusader Way.
Because these characteristics aren't simply something we talk about. We have the opportunity to witness them, celebrate them, and encourage them in one another.
This is the Crusader Way.
