Celebrating Literacy: I Love to Read Month
SPRING 2026 CCS NEWSLETTER
In February, Catholic Community Schools joined classrooms across the country in celebrating I Love to Read Month, a nationwide initiative dedicated to fostering a love of literacy. Reading not only strengthens cognition, vocabulary, and comprehension, but also nurtures imagination, reduces stress, and builds skills that stay with students for life.
At CCS, we believe that helping students discover books they love—and sharing those stories with friends and families—lays the foundation for becoming lifelong readers.
A highlight of the month is One School, One Book, a shared reading experience that brings students, families, and classrooms together. This year, students from all CCS elementaries explored The Very, Very Far North by Dan Bar-el, a story about a curious polar bear and his Arctic friends as they navigate friendship, adventure, and finding their place in the world. Through their everyday challenges and triumphs, the animals model empathy, cooperation, forgiveness, and resilience—lessons that resonate across classrooms and homes alike. Across CCS, activities varied by school, including science experiments, trivia, white-out days, and other creative projects, sparking lively discussion and meaningful family read-aloud experiences.
I Love to Read Month is a joyful reminder that literacy is at the heart of all we do. When students develop a positive relationship with reading, they grow in confidence, curiosity, and empathy—becoming thoughtful learners prepared to explore the world and the stories it holds.
